Update 4/25/12: Creating a MEETUP Group

Today I set up a "MEETUP Group" that our friends could join.  We've invited to be members of the group those friends who are interested in hiking with us on some of the legs.  Creating a Meetup Group will enable us to easily make announcements of target hikes where we would enjoy/require company (and the company could provide a shuttle car when a leg requires shuttling by car.)  The MEETUP Group, I hope, will be a great tool for us... a lot easier than sending out emails or making calls.  Check it out by clicking here:  http://www.meetup.com/PCT-Day-Hiking-Mission/

I added to the MEETUP Group two hikes for Day-1 (Campo-Border-Campo, 2.6-miles) and Day-2 (Campo-Lake Morena, 20.2 Miles).  Day-1 will mostly be a recon day for determining logistics required for the legs to get us up to Cibbets Flat, that's so only doing 2.6 miles of the PCT will be just fine for us. We might, however, also hike up to Kitchen Creek Falls that day... and maybe go for a dip in the creek too!

Birth of this Blog

So, I created this Blog on April 24, 2012.   At this point I have generated a document to outline strategies for hiking from the border to Scissor Crossing in the desert (78-miles to reach Highway 78, more or less.)  We would be happy to be able to make it that far (before summer and the desert heats to the point that it makes it prohibitive to go any further than the Lagunas or Cuyamaca area.)  It seems that the first leg, border to Lake Morena is going to be one of the most challenging sections because of the danger of parking a shuttle vehicle at the border and the sheer distance that the leg will require.  Oh, did I mention, we might have to carry our almost-4-year-old son Atticus on our backs.  By "we" I mean myself, Rich Williams, and my wife, Allie.  I turned 50 in January, and Allie says that doing stuff like this is just a symptom of a mid-life crises.  I prefer to think turning 50 is a good excuse to do dumb and crazy things.  Anyway, I will try to see if I can eventually post a link that takes you to the previously mentioned document with my current hiking strategy.
